Rabbit fever, as the name suggests, is caused by rabbit bites. But for your information, let us tell you that it spreads due to dangerous bacteria. It has been placed in Tier 1 Select Agent category. This category means that it is a dangerous bacteria. According to TOI news, rabbit fever is caused by tularemia bacteria and can infect animals and humans.
Tularemia i.e. rabbit fever is once again increasing its outbreak in America. Its cases are continuously increasing, till now it has increased by more than 50 percent. This is a rare disease but its infection spreads very fast. It is also known as rabbit fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2011 and 2022, the annual average incidence of tularemia infection has increased by 56 percent compared to 2001 to 2010.
How does rabbit fever spread?
Rabbit fever is caused by the bacteria Francisella tularensis. Tularemia can be spread to infected animals such as rabbits, rodents, hares and prairie dogs, as well as to humans through the bite of a tick or deer fly. The infection can be spread by drinking contaminated water and inhaling contaminated aerosols or agricultural products, according to the CDC, The Times of India reports. And it can also be spread by inhaling landscaping dust and coming into contact with the laboratory.
Symptoms of tularemia may appear differently in different people. In which high fever is a common symptom in all forms of the disease. Symptoms and signs of tularemia depend on the route of infection.
According to the CDC, some symptoms include:
Skin ulcers, mouth ulcers and sore throat, among others. Health officials claimed that eye irritation and swelling are other forms of symptoms. This form is called oculoglandular and occurs when bacteria enter through the eye.
A person can get infected by it while biting an infected animal or coming in contact with its eyes. Symptoms include irritation and swelling in the eye and swelling of the lymph glands in front of the ears. The second group of symptoms includes cough, chest pain and difficulty breathing.

Use insect repellent to avoid tick and insect bites.
Wear long sleeves and long pants to keep away ticks and deer flies.
Immediately remove stuck ticks with fine tweezers.
